Periventricular Leukomalacia in a Preterm Cohort: Associations With Placental Pathology
Key Points
This research aims to investigate the relationship between placental pathology and periventricular leukomalacia (PVL) in preterm infants.
Analyzed a large cohort of preterm infants born weighing less than 1500 grams.
Evaluated placental histology for chorioamnionitis.
Correlated findings between placental inflammation and incidents of PVL in infants.
Demonstrated a strong association between histologic chorioamnionitis and the occurrence of PVL.
Highlighted that infants with placental inflammation showed higher rates of brain injury.
Abstract
In a large cohort of preterm infants, we demonstrate a strong association between AI in the placenta (histologic chorioamnionitis) and PVL in infants born <1500 g.
