The article examines existing approaches to the definition of the concept «neologism». The author finds out various criteria to determine a neologism. The article also analyzes the functions performed by neologisms, their significance in the nomination processes, in highlighting the relevant tendencies of social development, in indicating an individual social status. The article studies the mechanisms involved in adapting English neologisms to the Russian language system, their morphological features. Dominating patterns proved to be the most effective in word-formation assimilation are paid a special attention in the article.
