Population

Individuals assessed for risk of incident heart failure with preserved (HFpEF) and reduced (HFrEF) ejection fraction

Intervention

Assessment of cardiovascular biomarkers (including markers of renal dysfunction, endothelial dysfunction, inflammation, natriuretic peptides, and UACR)

Outcome

Incident HFrEF and incident HFpEFhard clinical

Different biomarker profiles predict incident HFrEF versus HFpEF, highlighting distinct pathophysiological pathways and a need for novel predictive biomarkers specifically for HFpEF.

Abstract

Biomarkers of renal dysfunction, endothelial dysfunction, and inflammation were associated with incident HFrEF. By contrast, only natriuretic peptides and UACR were associated with HFpEF. These findings highlight the need for future studies focused on identifying novel biomarkers of the risk of HFpEF.
