In early 20th century Eastern Turkestan, bazaars, fairs and festivals were public spaces in which people would meet, stroll around, eat food, exchange news, and partake in amusements of different sorts. Some of these entertainments can fit into the category of street performance or show for an audience. Public appearances were often carried out by a spectrum of professional performers. They included acrobats and tightrope dancers but also included spectacles involving the use of animals; snake charming, trained monkeys, performing bears and dancing goats.
