To better understand the history of landscape gardening, we analyzed the genealogy of landscape gardeners written during “Sensui narabini Nogata no Zu”(Garden and Wild scenery drawing). Mr. Mirei Shigemori and Dr. Tsuyoshi Tamura considered the genealogy of landscape architects included in the “Sensui narabini Nogata no Zu” as an important resource for studying the history of landscape gardening. The book contains the names of famous landscape gardeners from the Heian to the Kamakura periods. However, there are different versions of the genealogy, and we compared and examined the other versions in this study. As a result, we found that the genealogy begins in the early Kamakura period. The persons from the Heian period were added later. The question is why medieval people paid so much attention to the early Kamakura period: current estimates suggest that it was probably the result of significant political and social changes. On the other hand, we also noticed that the Heian period landscape gardener was added. Consequently, we pointed out that Tachibana no Toshitsuna was an important figure to pay attention to and that he should be considered the author of “Sakuteiki”(Japan’s oldest landscaping book).
KOIKE et al. (Thu,) studied this question.
