This systematic analysis of current coal blending methods and coking processes includes detailed investigation of key factors in ensuring adequate quality of metallurgical coke—in particular, the chemical and petrographic properties of the coal and the coking parameters. Special attention is paid to methods of optimizing the batch composition when using coal of limited metamorphic development and functional additives and to innovative coking approaches. The recommendations presented regarding batch compositions that yield coke with specified properties when high-quality coal is in short supply are or great practical importance. The results of this review will be of value to coke production specialists, scientists researching coal chemistry, and coke plant teams responsible for finding scientifically valid solutions to production problems.
