Over time, having become a master in various genres of art, L.A. Ovchinnikov considered the influence of the surrounding artistic and cultural environment important in the formation of an artist's skill, and for him, especially the Arctic. The article analyzes a number of works from 1958–1980 created in the Arctic or thematically related to this region. The subject of the research is the process of changing L. A. Ovchinnikov's individual creative method under the influence of the artistic and cultural environment of the Arctic. The concept of an "artistic and cultural environment" is given as part of a socio-cultural environment focused on the values of the artistic culture of society, therefore, the article describes the social living conditions, substantive and procedural components of the Russian territory of the "high" Arctic, where the artist lived and worked in May-June 1958. A comprehensive research methodology was used, including a formal stylistic analysis of the created works. The history of exploration, the exotic nature, the peculiarities of the northern polar lighting and the general drama of the social aura, as well as the uniqueness of the culture of the "high" Arctic enriched his work with new images and motifs, changed the strategy and style of his work. The scientific novelty of the article consists in the study of one of the creative periods of L. A. Ovchinnikov, a St. Petersburg artist who was almost forgotten in the history of art, despite the fact that critics noted the merits of his works. Due to the trend policy of the state aimed at resuming the industrial and cultural development of the Russian Arctic, the study is relevant at the present time.
