Orthodontic treatment and periodontal health have bidirectional implications on each other throughout the treatment journey. The objective of this article is to highlight the importance of periodontal health in orthodontic patients and explore the impact that orthodontic treatment can have on the periodontal status. This article also discusses the options available to prevent and manage periodontal complications associated with orthodontic treatment. CPD/Clinical Relevance: This article provides a summary of the risk factors and the periodontal implications to consider pre-, during and post-orthodontic treatment.
