This paper traces Martin Heidegger’s principle of care through the work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Tim Ingold, and Arne Naess in order to develop an ecological argument rooted in ontology. The central concept I explore is ambience, an active milieu of things that reveal themselves through aletheia. Early exemplars of ambient music are examined to assert that this musical form is compatible with phenomenological ambience, arguing against Seth Kim-Cohen. Plato’s concept of chóra, a region that is both malleable material and a spatial medium, provides a term suitable to describe the generative principles of the ambient weather-world. These principles are expressed in Matrix For Glaciers, a site-responsive performance that creates an active field of potentialities for listeners. keywords:
