Climate change projections indicate many parts of Australia will become hotter and drier in the coming decades, with the number of extremely hot days increasing substantially. Remote settlements in Northern Australia are already characterised as being at the ‘edge’ of viable human habitation, having fragile demographic and social conditions, limited adaptive capacity, and under-resourced public services. Despite these challenges, few studies have focused on how projected temperature increases intersect with localised demographic trajectories across the north. Understanding spatial variations in heat-related vulnerability is crucial for shaping national policy, guiding economic and social responses, and supporting long-term planning for essential services. We utilise existing climate projection data to develop indices of demographic vulnerability to heat for remote Northern Australia and map spatial variations between communities. Using a three-dimensional descriptive typology of warming, ageing, and population decline, we demonstrate that vulnerability does not increase uniformly with increasing remoteness but instead reflects the socio-economic and population diversity of these regions. Our analysis highlights key distinctions among vulnerability types. While population ageing is widely recognised as a major challenge, Indigenous communities face heightened contextual vulnerability due to socio-economic disadvantage, which limits their coping and adaptive capacity. Our findings underscore the need for place-based strategies to address the intersecting demographic and climatic vulnerabilities shaping the remote towns of Northern Australia in the face of projected increases in numbers of extremely hot days.
