Purpose This paper aims to summarize the recent developments in bio-based smart packaging and its role in enhancing food safety, quality and sustainability. Design/methodology/approach The study evaluated recent innovations in biodegradable polymers, natural sensors and active components derived from renewable resources. It examined the integration of bio-based and smart technologies, considering regulatory and economic challenges. Findings Bio-based smart packaging provides real-time indicators for freshness, temperature and spoilage, while offering environmental benefits and consumer trust. However, commercialization faces hurdles related to cost, scalability and regulatory acceptance. Originality/value This review conducted to assess to recent development in Bio-based smart packaging technologies for improved production chain supply.
