Abstract In Information Systems (IS) projects, using methods to guide work is imperative for success. Over time, many methods emerged with distinct characteristics, objectives, and expected benefits, providing organizations and practitioners with a rich set of options. However, this has also brought significant challenges in selecting the most appropriate methods given the project context. Therefore, it is fundamental to understand the relevant variables to consider when selecting methods. Supported by a literature review and focus group sessions, the research offers important insights into the IS method selection process, providing a comprehensive model of the influencing variables, with their respective descriptions and justifications. The model variables are organized into five dimensions: Project, Team, Organization, Method, and Environment Characteristics. The proposed model enhances researchers’ and practitioners’ understanding of the aspects they should consider when designing or defining methods.
