Essay XVI executes the fourfold terminal mandate of the Gradient Residuals series: the formal definition of the Gradient Residual, its absolute demarcation from all contingent categories, the foreclosure of every alternative, and the definitive rigorous critique of Nothing across the full sweep of philosophy, Eastern thought, and science. This essay operates from the Nothing-pole exclusively. No physical instantiation, no substrate cascade, no Something-side derivation enters. The Gradient Residual is the arithmetic of Nothing's irreducible self-tension — the permanent, non-zero, scale-invariant, substrate-neutral remainder of Nothing's self-referential act — and this essay saturates everything that can be said about Nothing until the Gradient Residual is the only account left standing as a derived necessity. The critique proceeds through six structural groups, ordered by the type and sophistication of the error each tradition makes: (I) Prohibition and Passivation — Parmenides, Plato, Aristotle; (II) Hypostasis and Will — Plotinus, Augustine/Aquinas/Maimonides, Leibniz; (III) Dissolution — Laozi and Daoism, Nagarjuna and Madhyamaka; (IV) Epistemologisation and Conceptualisation — Kant, Hegel; (V) Phenomenologisation and Subjectivisation — Heidegger, Sartre, Wittgenstein; (VI) Scientific Reification — the Quantum Vacuum, David Bohm, Hawking-Hartle, Tegmark, Lawrence Krauss. Each thinker is named, cited, their insight acknowledged, their structural error identified with derivational precision, and the exact point of drift into contingency marked. The critique does not dismiss — it subsumes. Every partial insight is shown to be a partial approach to the Internal Contradiction of Nothing. Every error is shown to be a premature halt before the forced consequence of that contradiction. The Terminal Seal: the Gradient Residual is not a discovery, not a construction, not a mystical abyss, not a physical vacuum, not an epistemic limit, not a dialectical concept, not a privation, not a will, not a dissolution. It is the permanent arithmetic remainder of Nothing's self-referential act — what remains when Nothing has done everything it can do to register itself. It cannot be eliminated, reduced, explained away, or contingently varied. Nothing is always already what it will have been. The Residual Suite is closed.
