The article examines the history of development of chess in the surrounding of Lviv University during the 19th century and its influence on the cultural and academic life of the University.Chess is known as not only a popular form of intellectual entertainment, but also a tool for developing analytical and strategic thinking.The article examines the main stages of development of chess activity at the Lviv University, starting from the middle of the 19th century.The authors note that the history of development of chess in Lviv, including Lviv University, went through several main stages of development: from playing in coffee shops to a world-famous chess center.Special attention is paid to the names of outstanding chess players of Lviv University who participated both in local and international chess competitions.Also, the article examines the impact of chess on cultural context of the University, its benefit for student education, and as a way of promoting intellectual exchange and thinking.Initiatives to organize chess tournaments and events to promote the spread of the game among students and the academic community of Lviv University have been studied.Considerable attention is paid to the contribution of Lviv chess players, most of whom were associated with Lviv University, to world chess and their achievements.The article examines the relationship between the development of chess at Lviv University and the socio-cultural environment of that time, highlighting the role of chess in the formation of identity and cultural traditions among the student community.Chess tournaments in which representatives of Lviv University took part are described, in particular their format, level of participants and influence on the development of chess in Lviv.It is important to note that Lviv University, like many other higher educational institutions, could boast of an active chess community.Students, professors and other employees of the University participated in chess competitions, organized tournaments and improved their skills in chess mastery.
