Abstract The heterogeneous equilibria between liquid and vapour phases in the system water‐acetone‐chloroform have been investigated at a pressure of 760 mm. It appears that a saddle point occurs in the two‐liquids area of this system and that in addition a minimum occurs in the liquid surface. The positions of these two points have been determined. The vapour phase corresponding to the minimum does not form a minimum in the vapour surface as a result ow which this vapour is not condensed on rectification as a separate fraction. This minimum gives rise to the unusual phenomenon that the boiling point of some ternary mixtures does not rise on continued rectification but falls.
