This article is the third in a three-part Special Supplement presenting the Catholic Psychotherapy Association's guidelines for mental health professionals (MHPs) assisting in deliverance and exorcism ministry, with a focus on psychotherapeutic accompaniment. Psychotherapeutic accompaniment of spiritually afflicted people is often essential to healing and recovery. We explore the role of the treating MHP, with particular emphasis on ongoing differential diagnosis and collaboration with clergy and other members of the deliverance/exorcism team. Approaches to treatment are also explored, including attention to aftercare and termination. Common complexities are reviewed, including impediments to recovery, legal and ethical issues, and common pitfalls.
