This article examines the role of the logging industry in the economy of Russia and the Republic of Buryatia, as well as the key challenges it faces. Particular attention is paid to the impact of global crises, including sanctions and changes in sales markets, on the sustainability of enterprises. Specific problems of the industry are considered, both in Russia as a whole and in the region. Such problems as seasonality of production, equipment depreciation, inefficient waste disposal are highlighted. Particular attention is paid to the environmental problems of the industry and their impact on the environment. As a solution, cost optimization through logistics is proposed - a systematic approach to managing material, financial and information flows. Logistics is presented as a tool for increasing the efficiency of enterprises, reducing costs and creating conditions for investment in environmental and technological innovations. The article is intended for logistics specialists, heads of enterprises engaged in logging, interested in the implementation of effective management methods and production optimization.
