In the past decade the self-help movement has attracted much attention. Many believe it will continue as a major vehicle for mental health in the coming years. This article reviews the literature on self-help groups over the past 10 years. Emphasis is given to literature that examines professional roles with self-help groups, studies of self-help group processes, and outcome evaluations. Suggestions for social work practice and future research are proposed.
