Abstract Most teachers, in their teaching and learning practices, tend only to assess lower order thinking skills so that higher order thinking processes, including creative thinking, is rarely done. This study aimed to examine the increase of students’ mathematical creative thinking and motivation through Problem Based Learning (PBL) model using GeoGebra. This research employed an experimental method with randomised pre-test post-test control group design. The sample of the study were two classes of Year 11 students in one of the senior high schools in Lhokseumawe, Aceh, Indonesia. The data were analysed using t-test. The result showed that there was an increase of students’ ability of mathematical creative thinking and motivation taught using the PBL model with GeoGebra; it was higher than those who are taught using PBL model without the software. GeoGebra assisted learning is a useful tool for constructing mathematical concepts such as geometry and making positive contributions to improve mathematical creative thinking skills. The use of GeoGebra is highly recommended to enhance mathematical learning as it shifts mathematics learning to be more fun and interesting.
