A method for the detection of and adjustment for multiple discontinuities in pressure time series is presented. The method relies on determining a reference pressure series using improved interpolation techniques and objectively comparing the observed and reference time series. The ability of the method to locate discontinuities in time and to estimate the magnitude of the discontinuity are examined using randomly generated time series with known properties. The sea level pressure time series for Darwin (WMO 94120) is analyzed, and ten discontinuities are noted for the period 1869–1988. These are compared with previous examinations of the Darwin pressure time series.
