Two examples of the application of a large-eddy simulation data base to the study of organized structures in fully developed turbulent channel flow are presented. In the first study, it is shown that the flow contains an appreciable number of hairpin vortices among other flow structures. In the second study, the Karhunen-Loeve expansion and Lumley's characteristic eddy decomposition were used to extract deterministic structures from the flow. It is shown that the extracted eddies are energetic, make a significant contribution to turbulence production, and display some of the features of the organized motions observed in turbulent boundary layers.
