ABSTRACT Calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease may mimic an iliopsoas abscess on imaging. The combined use of polarized light microscopy and 16S rRNA gene analysis can help distinguish crystal‐induced inflammation from infection, thereby preventing unnecessary antimicrobial therapy.
