BACKRGROUND: Little is known about the use of static magnetic fields in dermatology and cosmetology. It is hypothesized that this type of magnetic field may modify the strength of biological properties of active compounds into skincare products. Among all of the ingredients, those with antioxidant properties are the most sought-after by consumers. The aim of the study was to evaluate the antioxidant properties of selected compounds that had been extracted from pomegranates as well as to assess changes in them following exposure to a static magnetic field. METHODS AND RESULTS: The research model was a human normal epidermal keratinocyte cell culture treated with a stressor-hydrogen peroxide solution-as well as with appropriate concentrations of the test compounds and exposed to a static magnetic field. Antioxidant gene expression (RT-qPCR) and antioxidant enzyme activity were assessed. It has also been determined production of reactive oxygien species During the study, decreases in the expression of the tested antioxidant genes were observed under the influence of a stressor. The use of the tested compounds resulted in statistically significant increases in the expression of these genes in the experimental variants exposed to oxidative stress, while the static magnetic field led to an enhancement of their activity. The activity of antioxidant enzymes was consistent with the molecular results. CONCLUSIONS: The obtained results confirm that ellagic and punicic acids exhibit antioxidant activity, and the expression of antioxidant genes and protein products increases under the influence of a static magnetic field. This indicates a magnetically induced cell defense reaction to neutralize the increased production of reactive oxygen species.
