He was the late Professor Hans Rademacher's last student. He was a Fulbright scholar at Cambridge University in 1960–61, and has spent leaves of absence from Pennsylvania State University at M.I.T. and Wisconsin. He has published extensively on the theory of partitions and basic hypergeometric functions. His books are Number Theory (1971) and The Theory of Partitions (1976). He has recently edited The Collected Papers of P. A. MacMahon.—Editors
