The idea of accountability lies at the heart of the fair administration of prisons in our society. This study examines the concept of accountability in prisons and the way it works in practice in four leading EC member states. In doing so it helps to answer the question of how similar and different these systems are and how the principle of accountability contributes to prison governance here and abroad.
