A three-phase pulse-width modulated multilevel voltage-source inverter topology with optimised switching performance is proposed in this paper. Actual power converter switching frequency is reduced substantially while the "effective" harmonic frequency is centered around the carrier frequency and the maximum attainable amplitude of the fundamental component of the line-to-line voltage waveform is increased when compared with the conventional sinusoidal PWM. Low distortion multilevel output waveforms make the proposed strategy highly compatible with high-power variable speed AC motor drives. A detailed description of the topology and its associated PWM strategy is presented along with simulation and experimental results.
