This techncial note introduces Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems for environmental engineering practitioners and infrastructure decision-makers. It covers system architecture - sensors, RTUs, PLCs,communication protocols, and the SCADA server - and explains how real-time monitoring changes the way facilities detect failures, maintain compliance, and plan maintenance. Environmental applications discussed include leachate treatment, wastewater discharge monitoring, C&D waste processing, groundwater remediation, pump stations, and ambient air quality. India-specific regulatory references include the C&D Waste Management Rules 2025 and CPCB continous effluent monitoring requirements. The note concludes with responses to SCADA investment and three questions to help practitioners define implementation scope.
