Abstract The paper surveys changes in natural landscapes of the central part of the Sakha Republic related to disturbances of the permanently frozen state of the ground produced by changes in climate. A set of direct and indirect climatic indicators is selected that is used as a benchmark for measuring changes in permafrost condition. Periods of elevated “geological stress”; are identified, and their relationships to particular climatic indicators are investigated.
