Abstract A pronounced difference between seeming ability and actual accomplishment suggests a learning disability (LD), which can have extensive academic and nonacademic negative effects, but the concept of LDs is rife with controversy. This study investigated eight university students' perceptions of how their learning disabilities have affected them. They emphasized the desirability of early diagnosis and of having general education teachers being alerted to potential LDs.
