Abstract

At the time of the publication of International Cultural Relations and Modern Japan, there was virtually no historical research on international cultural exchange in Japan.The primary goal of the book was to make up for this research lapse by taking the first step toward empirical historical research that would be on par with the research conducted by cultural exchange organizations overseas, which had made some progress to date.As a result, the book has gained a certain amount of historical significance in the study of the modern Japanese case, with the two concepts of "cultural mission" and "national diplomacy" mentioned in Chapter 5 Shibasaki, above, Thought and Behavior on the Idea of the International.
