Physiol. 37(2): 271-275. 1974.--A submaximal, multistaged treadmill test for dogs was characterized and used to evaluate the functional capabilities of nontrained, trained, detrained, and cage-confined groups. The test lasted 21 min and consisted of seven progressive stages of 3 min each that started at 4.8 km. h-l on a 0 y0 grade and ended at 6.4 km. h-r on a 20 ‘:G incline. Significant increases oc-curred in heart rate, mean blood pressure, coronary blood flow, and rectal temperature after the third stage of the test. Pre- and post-test blood samples were obtained and hemoglobin, hemato-crit, pyruvic acid, lactic acid, and free fatty acids levels increased, whereas glucose concentrations decreased. Group differences were also evaluated by the increase in resting heart rate after an in-travenous injection of atropine sulfate (200 pg *kg-‘).
