This article examines the evolution of physician-patient interaction from the traditional paternalistic model to one of participative decision making. I developed a model that advances a structured approach to medical decision making while focusing on the importance of open communication and the negotiation of roles and outcomes between patient and practitioner. Implications for patient, practitioner, and decision researchers are discussed.
