Forty-three certified organic growers in Massachusetts and Vermont, in the northeastern United States, were interviewed to learn their personal characteristics, the structure of their operations, and their perceptions of problems facing growers. They varied considerably in their backgrounds and personal characteristics. However, these variables were not strongly related either to how they rated their problems or whether their operations reflected several characteristics usually associated with organic agriculture.
