HE OCCURRENCE in Hodgkin's disease of T skin unresponsiveness to tuberculin antigen has been known for many years. As early as 1901-1902, Reed20 observed that tuberculin tests were negative in 5 of 8 patients with Hodgkin's disease. Subsequent reports by other authors confirmed this observation.l, 4, 10913, 15, 19,217 23,25,28 T h e depression of skin reactivity in these patients is not limited to the tubcrculin response. Other delayed type skin reactions, such as those to some viral and fungal antigens are also involved,los 13, and experimental induction of contact dermatitis is impaired.5,22 This skin anergy is not a property of Hodgkin's disease exclusively. The delayed skin test response has not been studied as intensively in other diseases; however, similar phenomena have been observed with lymphosarcoma and leukemia59 19, 21, 22 and with sarcoidosis.27 Reports on the tuberculin response of patients with carcinoma are contradictory.l3,19
