The authors compute the capacity of bit-interleaved coded modulation (BICM) in the case of ideal interleaving. They show that for most signal sets with Gray labelling, this turns out to be almost equal to the capacity of the signal sets themselves. This implies that BICM can achieve the same coding gain as TCM.
