This paper investigates the performance of high performance torque-controlled induction machine drive using the direct torque control scheme. The direct torque control is based on a deadbeat control of torque and flux utilizing the principles of stator flux field orientation. Since direct torque control does not rely on an inner current regulation loop, the transient response is superior to existing drive control scheme which use a PI regulator to control the motor current. This paper compares the performance of a direct torque controlled drive with a conventional rotor flux-oriented drive using sinusoidal PWM.>
