This paper provides a detailed review of the maximum power-point tracking (MPPT) techniques used in photovoltaic (PV) systems. The MPPT technique proves to be an essential part of the PV system, and hence the most appropriate method should be chosen in order to optimise the efficiency of the system, keeping in consideration the economic point of view. A small description of various MPPT techniques has been provided and comparison based on features, such as convergence speed, implementation complexity, accuracy, the relative cost of implementing the set-up and their commercial availability has been done. This paper aims at choosing the most appropriate technique for any particular PV application taking into account all the above-mentioned factors, especially the cost, complexity and accuracy, so as to maximise the effectiveness of the system by optimising all the parameters. It aims to serve as a useful guide for both users and manufacturers.
