Abstract The world has indeed become a global village and modern technology has made available news from all parts of the globe on a continuous basis. The broadcast media have contributed immensely to this global development; but broadcasting can only continue to achieve this feat if it is regulated internationally. Deriving from the social responsibility and development media theories, we here argue that international broadcast regulation can assist in eliminating provocative and harmful materials from other nations. We posit that regulation of broadcasting should be a vital instrument in the hands governments to check cross-national broadcasting. We however recommend that the approaches as adopted by broadcast regulation bodies across national boundary should be similar in order for the broadcast media to be well positioned for development in different spheres of human endeavour especially in the developing countries.
