The aims of the study were i) to analyse the evolution of the score line during the Tokyo 2020 womenʼs handball tournament and ii) to analyse the offensive performance indicators for the different types of matches clustered during the championship. A total of 4972 finalization actions were obtained from the official statistics of the 38 matches played. To cluster the different types of matches according to score evolution, the time series grouping was performed with the “dynamic time warping” algorithm. After cluster analysis, four main types of matches were identified—close (34%), balanced (24%), unbalanced (21%), and blowout (21%), reflecting a high level of competitive uncertainty. In close games, performance was not evenly distributed, as critical moments were found, with winning teams scoring higher than losing teams (p < 0.01) between minutes 26 and 30 of the first half. Additionally, goalkeeper performance significantly differentiated game outcomes (p < 0.05), highlighting the relevance of defensive performance under high-pressure conditions to win a game. Taken together, these findings support a dynamic and context-sensitive interpretation of performance in elite women’s handball. Specifically, the match results appear to emerge from the interaction between contextual factors (match type), temporal structures (critical moments) and performance actions. Within this framework, critical periods may act as amplification points in which performance differences are accentuated. This study contributes by integrating time series clustering with performance indicators, offering a more comprehensive understanding of match dynamics in elite women’s handball.
