Abstract A new coordination polymer (CP), ZnNa(ehbd) 2 (SCN) n ( 1 ) has been synthesized at room temperature using 2-hydroxy-3-ethoxy-benzaldehyde (Hehbd) and NaSCN, which was structurally characterized using various analytical instruments. A single-crystal X-ray diffraction study disclosed that 1 crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I 4 1 / a . The crystal structure contains heteronuclear units ZnNa(ehbd) 2 (SCN), which are linked by the ehbd – in a μ 5 : η 2 : η 2 : η 1 pentadentate coordination mode. Adjacent chains are connected through C–H⋯O, C–H⋯S and C–H⋯π hydrogen bonds to form a supramolecular structure. The luminescent properties were investigated in DMF solution and a Hirshfeld surface analysis of 1 was carried out. Coordination compound 1 shows a change of the luminescence properties of the ligand precursor Hehbd resulting from the interaction between the metal cations and the ehbd − .
