Abstract

Abstract Histamine containing granular material was collected from water lysed peritoneal rat mast cells. The histamine was observed to be released in the presence of cations. A re‐uptake of the amine occurred on suspension of depleted granular material in histamine containing solutions. Release as well as uptake of histamine occurred rapidly at 0°C. The results are in accordance with the idea that histamine is electrostatically bound to a granular protein‐heparin complex, the release and uptake of the amine being a physical process depending on the extra‐ and intra‐granular concentration ratios of histamine and cations.
