As the global energy landscape shifts toward cleaner, more environmentally responsible solutions, geophysics is emerging as a cornerstone in the exploration, monitoring, and management of these new energy systems. This special section of The Leading Edge features an array of research topics that reflect the broad applicability of geophysical techniques in the energy transition. Among the highlighted areas are geothermal energy, which leverages subsurface heat for power generation and heating; subsurface energy storage, including technologies such as compressed air energy storage, hydrogen storage, and carbon capture and sequestration (CCS); and geophysical approaches for locating and managing critical resources, such as rare earth elements and battery minerals essential for renewable energy infrastructure.
