The author considers the potential for exploitation of artificial intelligence to “crank” out papers using data made publicly available by other researchers. Employing the concept of the “free rider” from the economic literature, she argues that unless data repositories can come up with solutions to stave off such use, we will be substituting one ethical problem in Criminology for another.
