In a departure from usual practice, the Science Research Council has published a 'paper symposium' on artificial intelligence (AI), to stimulate discussion within the British science community before making a decision on the extent and allocation of future support of research in the field. Sir James Lighthill was asked to make a 'layman's' survey of work in this field, and his report, supplemented by comments from Professor N S Sutherland, Dr R M Needham, Professor H C Longuet-Higgins and Professor D Michie, comprises the 'paper symposium'.
