Due to the significant increase in market dynamics and constantly changing circumstances, manufacturing companies are facing increasing pressure. This is expressed in volatile demand and shorter product life cycles, which place complex requirements on production. Production planning and control, as the linkage of internal value creation with external requirements and input from external suppliers, has a significant influence on the production and is therefore the key enabler for the economic success of manufacturing companies. In order to address the high complexity in production planning and control, digitization of manufacturing and techniques of Artificial Intelligence offer great potential for further development of production planning and control. This paper presents a stage-based maturity model that describes the development of production planning and control through the utilization of digital technologies and Artificial Intelligence. Furthermore, the paper explains which potentials both fields offer at individual maturity stages of production planning and control in order to improve planning results.
