Stator-Permanent Magnet (stator-PM) machines have gained interest over the past years due to their high torque-to-power density, a simple and passive rotor, and better thermal management capabilities. This paper compares the Flux Switching Permanent Magnet Machine (FSPM) with pole winding, Doubly Salient Permanent Magnet Machine (DSPM) with toroidal winding, and Doubly Salient Parallel Path Magnetic Machine (DS-PPMM) with pole winding configurations being investigated in literature. Large-scale optimization is employed for each machine to increase the average torque and reduce torque ripples. 2-D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used to analyze electromagnetic performance including flux linkages, back-EMFs, cogging torque, electromagnetic force, and torque vs. speed characteristics.
