Couples behavioral conformity to their stated reproductive intentions has been investigated using longitudinal data from Taiwan during 1974-77. Desire for additional children was the most important predictor of fertility. Couples who did not desire additional fertility appeared to make a greater effort to avoid pregnancy than others but negative intentions seem to have been considerably disregarded even through contraceptives were abundanntly available. A majority of those who desired additional children in 1974 had changed their intentions to no additional child by 1978. (Authors)
