Our father did not interfere with our choosing an academic career which I was the first of the family to do. As a practical man he may have had some misgivings. He could not know that in the end it was a better choice than being an industrialist or landowner. Owing to inflation and to being forced to take refuge in Britain, I would have lost my property anyway.
