This article discusses a study to determine the relationship of iron to the colored organic matter of natural waters. The specific objectives were to determine the quantitative and qualitative relationships between iron and organic color in natural waters, the factors that modify these relationships, and the properties of the colored matter responsible for them. The experimental approach was to extract the yellow coloring matter from one or more natural waters, determine possible relationships with iron under controlled conditions, and set up hypotheses for testing on natural unmodified water samples.
