Global South cities face pervasive and persistent housing quality challenges, and addressing these issues is crucial for advancing Sustainable Development Goals 3 and 11—ensuring healthy lives and promoting sustainable cities and communities. In this study, we systematically reviewed relevant literature to identify effective and contextually suitable global strategies for enhancing housing quality in the Global South. The study addresses two key research questions: (a) What are the sustainable strategies for enhancing housing quality? and (b) What are their implications and suitability for rapidly urbanizing countries in the Global South? The findings indicate that among various transnational housing quality improvement strategies, three stand out as particularly sustainable—self-help, upgrading, and redevelopment. Following this, we argue that a mixed-methods approach, integrating self-help and upgrading, is particularly relevant for improving housing quality in urbanizing countries of the Global South. The study advocates for granting security of tenure to residents and establishing essential preconditions for self-help housing.
